10 Best Classical Guitars

The classical guitar is a member of the guitar family used in classical music. It is an acoustical, wooden guitar with strings made of nylon, as opposed to the metal strings used in acoustic and electric guitars. The traditional classical guitar has 12 frets clear of the body and is held on the left leg so that the hand falls at the back of the sound hole, (this is called the classical position). The modern steel string guitar, on the other hand, usually has 14 frets clear of the body and is commonly played off the hip. The classical guitar is designed to give a softer sound, rather than the harder sounds of steel or electric guitars.

How to choose a classical guitar

409580-200 Size

The modern, full size classical guitar has a scale length of around 650 mm (26 in), with an overall instrument length of 965 – 1,016 mm (38.0 – 40.0 in). This length may have been chosen because it’s twice the length of a violin string. As the guitar is tuned to one octave below that of the violin, the same size gut could be used for the first strings of both instruments.

There are smaller classical guitars that suit children but may be uncomfortable for adults. Smaller-scale instruments are produced to assist children in learning the instrument as the smaller scale leads to the frets being closer together, making it easier for smaller hands.

The scale-size for the smaller guitars is usually in the range 484 – 578 mm (19.1 – 22.8 in), with an instrument length of 785 – 915 mm (30.9 – 36.0 in). Full-size instruments are sometimes referred to as 4/4, while the smaller sizes are 3/4, 1/2 or 1/4.

409580-200 Shape

The shape of the guitar also has a huge effect on the sound and “projection” of the guitar, (see below for more descriptions on projection). A thin body produces a smaller sound with more treble, while a thick body allows the bass notes to sound out. Finally, the shape of the guitar is all about personal preference. Some classical guitars seem elongated, which may not look very aesthetically pleasing, to some people. It’s all up to your personal preference.

409580-200 Nylon Strings

The sound produced from classical guitar strings can vary extensively, depending upon the manufacturing techniques and materials used in the process. Nylon strings produce an entirely completely different sound and feel than steel strings. On the plus side, they are much easier to push down with your fingertips, a major advantage if you’re just beginning on guitar. On the negative side, however, they don’t produce a sound with as much edge as steel strings. If you want to be able to use a pick to get a chunk sound, nylon strings might not be for you. Stringing a classical guitar is completely different than stringing an acoustic or electric guitar.

409580-200 Projection

Projection is a quality that is often overlooked by many people, seeking to buy a classical guitar. They take into account the size and sound quality, while they’re finger picking, but they forget all about the projection. Projection is the ability for the sound of a classical guitar to maintain a strength of sound, without distorting its quality and clarity. If you plan to be playing your classical guitar in public, projection is an important quality to keep in mind.

The best way to test projection, is to compare the guitar with one that you know has good projection. If that’s not possible, then have another person come along with you, to listen to how it plays in an open space.

409580-200 Quality of the Tuning Machines

The tuning machines on a classical guitar are very different than those found on an acoustic or electric guitar. They are much more prone to slipping, especially with lesser-quality guitars, which often results in an out-of-tune guitar. Test the tuning pegs to make sure that they run cleanly, without any slippage. Wind and unwind them to see if there are any jumps or catches in the mechanism. Nothing frustrates a musician more than a guitar that easily gets out of tune. There is an easy way to avoid that potential problem, by simply purchasing the right classical guitar.
